<Survey end> Face up with everyone 《Ultimate choice》 Aug2022

1 Survey overview

"The ultimate choice that everyone faces" Aug2022 collects and discusses the "ultimate choice" that everyone thinks.

We face various “ultimate choices”, including the corona misfortune. Some Ultimate Choices require social consensus, but when faced with these Ultimate Choices, we are stunned.

Therefore, the purpose of this research is to extract the "ultimate choice" hidden in society in advance and draw a tentative conclusion so that we can deal with it without being stunned even if we are forced to make the "ultimate choice." It will serve as a foundation for social decision-making to deal with the ultimate choice, preparing for the next pandemic, other emergencies, and even a future where AI may make social decisions for us. .

The survey period is from August 19th (Friday) to September 6th (Tuesday), but you can participate in the middle.

If you would like to participate after reading "About this survey" described below, please let us know your email address using the form below. (Recruitment has ended)

2 About this survey

The Ultimate Choice Study Group (former name: Kyoto University Ultimate Choice Research Light Unit) is engaged in research on difficult social issues that are difficult to reach consensus on. For example, in the corona crisis that began in 2020, there were many conflicting issues such as the priority of vaccines and the priority of infection prevention and economic activity. However, people's ideas vary widely, and social consensus is not easily achieved. In this way, we are studying the "ultimate choice" that causes conflict and is difficult to reach social consensus.

Therefore, the purpose of this research is to extract the "ultimate choice" hidden in society in advance and draw a provisional conclusion so that we can deal with such a choice without being stunned. It will serve as a foundation for social decision-making that addresses the ultimate choice, preparing for the next pandemic or other emergency, and even for a future where AI may make social decisions for us.

(1) Survey purpose and significance

The corona crisis is a threat common to all humankind and a problem that has affected everyone. However, despite the fact that the Covid-19 pandemic is a matter of life and death for us, we have had few opportunities to express our opinions about it.

There are countless “ultimate choices” like this hidden in our society, not just the corona misfortune. However, our society is not ready for a myriad of Ultimate Choices. Even if you start thinking about it after facing 《Ultimate Choice》, it will be difficult to make a better choice.

Therefore, in this survey, we will collect and manifest the "ultimate choice" that you think. After that, I draw tentative conclusions about Ultimate Choice.

The results of the survey will serve as materials for social consensus and better choices for the "ultimate choice" that will be faced with reality in the future.

(2) Research background

Confusion in the COVID-19 Pandemic

The corona crisis has brought many challenges. In the medical field, the question arose as to who should be treated. Alternatively, there was the issue of who should be inoculating the limited number of vaccines. Alternatively, the question of whether the impoverished lockdown should continue, even if it is to prevent infection, has often been raised. There are no absolute correct answers to these. Therefore, in order to make better choices, it is necessary to understand the difference and distribution of the "right choices" that individuals think.

Frequent occurrence of the "Hardest choice

The "Hardest choice" does not occur only in the case of the COVID-19 Pandemic. The "Hardest choice" will occur in many areas, and similar confusion will also occur. Therefore, in order to deal with similar problems, it is necessary to understand people's thoughts on the "Hardest choice" that arose from the coronal disaster.

Emergence of AI

In recent years, the progress of AI has been remarkable, and it is expected that AI will eventually be involved in social decisions. Regarding the “ultimate choice” in a pandemic, it is expected that eventually AI will give advice to humans and AI itself will make decisions. Of course, AI does not make decisions from scratch without any material. AI performs machine learning on human decision data and makes decisions based on that data. So if human decision data is biased, AI decisions will be biased. Therefore, if AI learns the government's judgment as it is, the measures that everyone is dissatisfied with will be repeated as they are. So, we need to collect your “right choices” to explore what data should be for AI and how to collect it better.
